Gravel

Main Information

Description

Shahre Beton gravel is a high-quality coarse aggregate with standard grading, used in concrete production, road construction, and substructure applications. Its clean and uniform particles help increase the strength, durability, and workability of concrete.

Product Technical Description

Gravel, or coarse aggregates, are natural or crushed particles, often rounded in texture and of medium size, most of which are composed of quartz. These aggregates are the result of weathering and erosion in riverbeds and shorelines, and play a vital structural role in road construction and substructures. The share of stone materials in concrete is about two to three quarters of the volume; usually 60 to 70 percent gravel and 30 to 40 percent sand. To use gravel in concrete, the following requirements for health and grading must be followed:

  • Permissible weight loss in the sodium sulfate test is MAA's maximum of 12 percent, and in the magnesium sulfate test, a maximum of 18 percent.
  • Control of harmful substances such as clay lumps, chert, coal/lignite, soluble chlorides, and sulfur compounds according to national standards (446, 4978, 4984, 1-19038).
  • Full compliance with the specified grading categories for each nominal size.

Types of Gravel

  • Crushed stone: Durable, versatile, and cost-effective for structures and roads.
  • Fine dust gravel: Finely crushed powder; suitable on its own or in combination with coarser aggregates for layering and compaction.
  • River gravel: Rounded particles with natural abrasion; suitable for more workable concretes.
  • Almond/pea gravel: Uniform small particles; used in landscaping and special concretes.

Types of Sand

  • Washed sand: A collection free from soil and useless fine particles; suitable for concrete casting and quality mortars.
  • Wind-blown or natural sand: Contains softer particles; ideal for finishing and surface coverings.
  • Crushed sand: Produced by crushing hard stone; has more roughness and creates better adhesion to cement.
  • Double-washed sand: Thoroughly washed and clean; the best choice for high-strength and sensitive structures.

Difference between Gravel and Sand

The main difference between gravel and sand lies in their size and their role in making concrete. Gravel, as a coarser aggregate, is responsible for bearing loads, increasing the density of concrete, and reducing its shrinkage. In contrast, sand, which is made up of finer particles, is used to fill the spaces between coarse grains, improve mix workability, and increase the cohesion of the cement paste. The precise and principled combination of these two materials ensures that the concrete maintains high compressive strength and long-lasting durability, performing better against stresses and environmental changes.

Summary

Gravel and sand may seem simple, but functionally, they are the heart of any concrete structure. The right choice of type and combination makes the difference between a durable structure and a weak one. Shahre Beton, with its specialized approach in supplying and evaluating top-quality materials, is a reliable partner throughout all construction phases, focusing on quality and durability in project execution.
